Is Concrete Waterproof?
Waterproof concrete refers to concrete that is not affected by water (in its liquid form) or prevents water penetration. Concrete that is waterproof doesn't necessiarily mean it will also protect against water vapor movement. On the other hand, vaporproof concrete will always be waterproof.
Water does not move through concrete that has been waterproofed but water vapors do. As water vapor approaches the point of condensation underneath the flooring materials, it essentially becomes water. If you focus on making concrete vaporproof first, it will then be waterproof as well.
Vapor barriers should be used under all concrete floors upon which airtight, impenetrable floor finishes will be applied. Floor coverings (vinyl tile, carpeting, wood and linoleum, etc.) can seal moisture within the concrete floor slab increasing possible damage to the floor coverings down the road.
To help prevent moisture damage to floor coverings, use a low cement-to-water ratio concrete and moist cure it for five to seven days. Allow a sufficient drying period and test the concrete’s moisture condition before floor covering installation.
Remember, vaporproof concrete is waterproof concrete. Once you’ve taken the necessary precautions to ensure that your concrete will not be subject to moisture damaging water vapors, you can look for appropriate floor sealers.
